dinklageemmyawardnomination2012game of thronestyrion lannister<p>Hey everyone, </p> <p>So I have finally had a chance to sit down and write about my experience about seeing Peter in the Imaginary Invalid at Bard College. I have decided to break down the experience into different parts so you can decide if you&#8217;d like to read certain aspects or its entirety.</p> <p><!-- more --></p> <p>I&#8217;ll first start with the overall production design. It was a relatively small theater but it had a very unique stage and set. There were two sections of the audience with the stage being in the center of the room and the audience being split on the left and right of the stage. The stage was also divided into two levels. The upper level is where the main performance and set was while the bottom level was used as an &#8220;entrance&#8221;. I say &#8220;entrance&#8221; as it is the entrance to the house that the performance is set in so you can see the reactions of the characters in the above and below levels. It was really neat and both my friend and I thought it was a brilliant idea of constructing the stage. The costuming was funny and spot on with the characters (bright colors for the females [except for Peter&#8217;s] and wonderful detailed garments for the male characters). The setting of the play never changed but although it may have bored some people (which I overheard was the complaint from a few audience members), I thought that the actors and the plot were able to support it and keep it lively. </p> <p>The overall performance was spectacular. Our faces hurt from laughing and smiling so much. My friend and I weren&#8217;t incredibly familiar with Imaginary Invalid but we definitely wanted to learn more after watching the performance. Every actor played their part wonderfully as they not only knew their role inside and out but they had great timing and really connected with one another. To be honest, I only went to see it for Peter (I&#8217;m a theater buff but it wasn&#8217;t the main reason I went to see it) but after the performance, I wanted to know more about the cast and what other shows I could see them in. I particularly loved the actors who played the female roles (this was commonplace in the 1600s through early 1800s which I thought was great that they incorporated it) because their over-exaggerations of female characters and their high pitched voices (especially their singing) is what made my friend and I absolutely die of laughter. </p> <p>Now for Peter. He was an absolute thrill to watch. He played a saucy house maid (wearing a lovely bonnet and black dress) whose quips, input, and facial expressions would have the audience rolling on the floor. Every time he graced the stage, we would all be on the verge of tears (due to laughter of course) because of his perfect reactions to the situations. I really believed that he was this character and I truly forgot that it was Peter. Unfortunately, I didn&#8217;t have the chance to meet him afterwards as my friend and I were unable to stay for long (our situation: we lived about 2 hours away [it was nearing 10&#160;pm when the show finished], hadn&#8217;t eaten all day, and we were quite tired after traveling and watching the performance). However, it had been a dream of mine to watch him perform live and not only was I entranced by his performance but it was also an honor to finally be able to see him. </p> <p>I have to commend Erica (Peter&#8217;s wife who was also the director) for tying in such a marvelous performance and display. We can see the hard work that she, the cast, crew, and production staff had to put in to make the performances unforgettable and enjoyable. There were basically no breaks or real scene changes so each scene had to flow right into another scene (which is rather difficult going from scene to scene in a show that has a running time of an hour and half or so). The production staff, cast, crew, and especially Erica did an absolutely fabulous job and I have nothing but the highest praise for all the work and creativity that they have done for this play. </p> <p>I highly recommend anyone who is in the area and has a chance to definitely go see the play. It was a fantastic experience and I&#8217;m hoping to get my brother to go see it with me for a second time this weekend. </p> <p>Side story: My friend and I were seated in the second row (which was very close to the stage). I&#8217;m one of those paranoid people who make sure that their phone is off about 30 times before the show begins (my friend also recalls me turning off my phone). It was three minutes into the show (nothing substantial has happened and there are only two characters on stage at the moment) when I hear someones ringtone. It was strange because I had the same ringtone and I thought, &#8220;Well, someone here also loves Game of Thrones as much as I do.&#8221; It wasn&#8217;t until the actors were speaking a little more softly when I realized that it was my phone that was going off. And I&#8217;m not saying it was softly playing, it was on max volume. So I started panicking to shut it off but it just wasn&#8217;t going off. My friend started laughing uncontrollably when the actors on stage were calling Peter&#8217;s character (which would be his opening entrance to the stage). By this time I was having a full-on heart attack. Literally as Peter walked on stage, I was able to shut my phone off. The people in my section were laughing and one guy behind me told me I should have kept it on because he wanted to see how Peter would have reacted.
